Bad calls

OK, I am with Bruce - the Immaculate Reception was a TD, the call was made 33 years ago, and that's that. But while searching for a link to the Drew Pearson offensive pass interference, I came across this link to an ESPN poll on the worst calls of all time.

I can give you the worst for a Philly fan: the no offsides call on the Islanders in Game 6 of the 1980 Cup finals. The goal should never have been allowed, and as the game ended tied in regulation, it arguably cost the Flyers the victory. Since that game ended the series, it was irrevocable.

That makes it a bit different from the Denkinger call - the Cards didn't have to lose 10-0 in Game Seven. They at least could take the field to get even. The Flyers were done.

I can't think of anything of that magnitude involving the other major Philly teams, probably because they rarely get to a point similar to Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals, but I am sure Mark will be able to come up with some.

How about non-Philly teams? Bruce and Dan, what do you think are the worst? Colorado's 5 downs and Denkinger's blown call stand out, but the Granddaddy of them all is the '72 Olympics men's basketball game against the Soviets.

PS: Inside Sports when it first came out was one of my favorite mags (is it still even published?). The Good Doctor was one of their comedic features, a fake Q&A that I always thought was a jibe taken at "Ask Hal the Referree" from The Sporting News. Anyway, the "question" posed to the doctor was "If the Rose Bowl is the Granddaddy of them all, what's the Grandmommy?" His answer: the Rose Kennedy Bowl.
